I had my first Chinese lesson on May 17th 2011.

My knowledge of traditional characters is not profound. It just happens, that as a physical scientist I can not remember things and thus analyze them. That misleads people to think I may be a little more advanced.

As a proof of that, I know almost now 成語. As for sayings, one of my favorites is:
不患人之不己知,患不知人也
I feel that if I could accept this, my life would be much more peaceful. But I am as thick headed as a donkey and keep expecting from others what I expect from myself.

A Chinese saying that people say about me is 忘東忘西, because I always forget my stuff everywhere. Luckily, all waiters know it and come running after me.

Actually I don’t know too many traditional characters. In mainland China we only learn and use simplified characters. These days traditional characters are only used in Hong Kong, Taiwan and Macau. From your comments I can see that learning Chinese is really your habit! I’m so happy that someone really likes Chinese! How long have you been studying Chinese ? And what’s your favorite Chinese saying ?

I never argue in public about traditional and simplified characters, because everyone should do as they find convenient but this is an example where simplified is so difficult! You sit and ponder, why the ancient Chinese identified “send” and “hair”, until you realized they didn’t.

Plus, in this case the traditional character is so easy to remember! That is, if you love to analyze characters. You have the abbreviated form of 長, long. Then you have the hair radical 現 (traditional radical 59). Then you have the classical variant of 拔, pull seize without the hand. This usually is written like 友 with a dot, but I believe that comes from handwriting and it’s 犮. 🙂
