We’ve all tried to do it when hanging out with friends on the court, playing a game of hoops – but how many times have you actually been successful when attempting to spin a basketball on your finger? In today’s SexyMandarin Blog, the team have thrown into the air and landed on our finger a how-to lesson in the art of spinning a basketball on your finger.
Basketball – 篮球 Lánqiú
Finger – 手指 Shǒuzhǐ
Spin – 纺 Fǎng
Hand – 手 Shǒu
Step 1 – Find your groove…
This will be the middle line running through the ball that is intercepted by a horizontal line. This is the best place for your finger to rest the ball on.
Step 2 – Get comfortable…
When positioning your body for a spin, the ball should be at approximately face level, with the elbow slightly bent. Rest the ball ion your fingertips lightly, ball not touching your palm.
Step 3 – Get ready…
Position yourself with the heel of your hand pointed away from your body – positioning the hand this way will cause a better flick into the air. Once you flick the ball into the air in Step 4, you will turn your hand back around to face you for easier spinning.
IF you want to use two hands: Have your other hand resting on the back of the ball closer to you (this is the hand that will cause the ball to spin).
Step 4 – Flick the ball up!
Flick the ball up from your fingertips into the air (not too high!), creating a twisting motion with your fingertips.
If using two hands, use your thumb on your extra hand to cause a spin at the same time.
Step 5 – Catch it!
Catch the ball with your index finger, by moving your arm toward the ball as the ball is falling. The quicker you can catch the ball, the faster the ball will spin, and the longer you can keep it going on your finger. Try to catch the ball in the centre groove mentioned in Step one.
Step 6 – Keep it going!
Keep the basketball spinning by using your free hand. This can be tricky, but if you keep practicing, it will get easier, and you’ll be on your way to impressing your friends before you know it!
Keep Practicing!
