It’s Tuesday night Poker Night for you and your buddies. The snacks are plenty, drinks are flowing, and everyone is having a great time… till you’ve noticed that you are down to your last three chips. Trying to maintain your poker face, you stare with desperation at your cards wondering “do I have anything in my hand that could win?”
In today’s SexyMandarin Blog, we’ll be showing you the various poker hands you can be dealt when playing a game of poker, then translating them into both Chinese characters and Pinyin. So now you too will know when to hold them, and know when to fold them…
TERMS:
To have a poker face – 板脸 băn liăn
To increase the bet /raise the stakes – 加注 jiā zhù
THE HANDS:
Royal Flush –皇家同花顺 Huángjiā tónghuāshùn
This is the ultimate hand to receive! This hand is where you have 10,J,Q,K,A all from the same suit in your hand at the same time.
Straight Flush – 同花顺 Tónghuāshùn
A Straight Flush is where you have all five cards in numerical order from the same suit in your hand at once.
Four of a Kind – 四对对碰 Sì duì duì pèng
This is where you have four cards that are the same number in your hand.
Full House – 满屋 Mǎn wū
This is where you have both a set of two cards and a set of three cards that are the same number in your hand.
Flush – 丰足的 Fēngzú de
This lucky hand is where you all of the cards in your hand are from the same suit!
Straight – 直 Zhí
This is where all of the cards that are in your hand are in order (e.g. 2,3,4,5,6 or 8,9,10,J,Q… etc). These cards can be any suit, any color.
Three of a Kind – 三同 Sān tóng
This is where you have three cards that are all the same number in your hand. (NOTE: if the remaining two cards in your hand are the same number, then you have a Full House!)
Two Pair – 两对 Liǎng duì
This is where you have two sets of cards that are the same number in your hand.
One Pair – 一对 Yī duì
This is where you have two cards that are the same number in your hand.
